DIY security alarm
I’m making my own alarm system with Home Assistant, Zigbee, and some wired stuff.

Home network v2
My home network 2.0 started with me replacing all my Unifi switches for MikroTik — and looking for a new router. Then followed a lot of network cabling and Wi-Fi improvements, and wrapping up with some IPv6.
TLDR; I’m taking my home network to the next level.
Ongoing
- Upgrade my file server; Zeta
🐘
- With only an Intel Pentium G4560 CPU, my file server is a bit weak. It needs an upgrade!
- Redundant core switches, with MLAG
🐘
- I now have two MikroTik CRS317-1G-16S+, the plan is to connect distribution switches and servers to both and use MLAG.
- Rearrange homelab rack
🐘
- Move servers around in my homelab rack, better utilizing the space.
- Replace motion sensors on RPi security system
🐘
- I will be replacing all Aqara motion sensors with Hue — they seem more reliable, have better battery life, short cool-down and I like the mounting options better.
- Whole house alarm system buzzers/sounders
🐘
- Having sounder that are audible throughout the house is nice. Getting attention without using the 90 dB indoor siren.
- External voltage ref on RPi security system
🐘
- Using an external voltage reference to get more accurate voltage measurements on my RPi security system.
- Wine cabinet in home office
🐘
- Finding room for a wine cabinet in my home office.
- Garage door control
🐘
- Control the garage door from Home Assistant — using a Shelly PRO relay
- DIY fire alarm
🐘
- I'm looking into implementing professional smoke detectors into my RPi security system.
- Test Netdata for homelab monitoring
🐘
- I've been without a monitoring solution for a while now — didn't want to spend time setting one up. With Netdata I might not have to.
- 5V power rail improvements on the RPI DIY security system
🐘
- My 5V rail was a bit weak, giving under-voltage errors on the Raspberry Pi. It needs improving.
- Expand and improve the water alarm on my RPi DIY security system
🐘
- Add custom actions to the water alarm; like turning off the dish washer and main water valve.
- Power and battery setup for the RPi DIY security system
🐘
- I still have some work to do on the power and battery setup on my home made security system.
- Build a module to show electricity price and consumption
- I'm making a simple module, using WeMos D1 mini, to show the current electricity price and consumption — using LEDs.
- Running MikroTik CHR as my border router
- Setting up a virtual instance of MikroTik's CHR router, and replace my EdgeRouter.

Zeta is back!
- In the fall of 2022 I turned off Zeta, my file server, due to the extreme price of electricity. I migrated all the data to a 3x18 TB raidz1 pool on Alpha instead. But last year I brought it back — and …

Moving videos to Bunny Stream
- I’ve looked into different video solution for this blog before — and, at the time, settled on using Coconut.co for encoding, AWS S3 for hosting, and Video.js for playing. Bunny Stream was on the table …

Finally getting fiber between the house and garage
- Getting network to the garage is a story with many chapters. I started out with Wi-Fi mesh, then CAT6 — and now, finally, fiber!

Making a pub table — with an old oak tabletop
- Sometimes, when I’m not too busy with my homelab or some other electronics project — I pretend to be a woodworker or carpenter. This time I made a pub table, using an old kitchen tabletop of oak. I …

Underground conduits to garage and shed
- Two years ago we dug and laid three conduits from the house to the garage, and from the garage to the shed. Primarily to get more power to the garage — and any power to the shed. I used the …
